[Article] Rolling Stone Magazine, "The Liberation of Steve McQueen"
In the insightful interview, McQueen begins by revisiting his childhood through a harrowing mid-17th century tale shared with him by his father. A story involving 40 indigenous people cornered by French colonists near a cliffside in Grenada. The tragic, yet liberating outcome inspired the award-winning director to explore historical events he says are “swept under the rug”.
He goes on to share his journey through the British art scene, along with his decision to break into the film industry. McQueen admits the pain that went into creating his works ‘Hunger’ and ‘Shame’, as well what it meant for the nine-time Oscar nominated film, ‘12 Years A Slave’.
